Story lovers rejoice as the much-anticipated Guild Wars 2 Living World Season 1 Episode 1 finally returns to the Story Journal. Today marks the return of what has felt like a missing piece of our journey for years, and brings a strong sense of completion to the Elder Dragon slack. Finally, players can experience some much-needed context of some of those inside jokes and references to Scarlet Briar that kept cropping up throughout Living World Season 2, as well as the beginnings of the friendship between the Pact Commander and characters like Rox, Braham, and Frostbite.
It’s been 9 years since Flame and Frost was available for the Guild Wars 2 community, making the prior instant jump from the core story to Season 2 somewhat jarring for those unfamiliar with her story. While it was intended to be a limited time story, this quickly became an issue as the core story began to build on the new team. In fact, the first episode of Season 2 addresses some of the trauma experienced by some of our favorite characters surrounding the destruction of Lion’s Arch and Scarlet.
New players were left in the dark and just had to take the information thrown at them and assume Scarlet = Bad, and that was enough. It’s difficult to latch on to characters, even ones that are extremely well written, if you’re only introduced to them with the assumption that you understand their story. “Guess what, folks, you’re stuck with us even though you don’t know who we are!” There’s also a lot of unresolved tension between the characters that unfamiliar players have had to accept.
However, thanks to many reorganizations, players can now experience this first episode in a new form that is more closely aligned with what we are now accustomed to in the current seasons of Living History, and it resolves almost all of the above issues. Not only that, all of Season 1 to come throughout 2022 will be free for all players forever. This also applies to players who only have a Free-to-Play account!
We’ve had the opportunity to experience Flame and Frost firsthand and I can’t commend the team enough for what they’ve accomplished. Season 1 of Living will be absolutely massive, structuring the saga in the Living World format we’re used to, has allowed the team to tell exactly the story it wants in a much more direct and linear event that prepared us well for Mordremoth later.
As mentioned above, it’s been years since I attended Living World Season 1, and without the prior opportunity to replay the episodes, I had all but forgotten some of the interactions and introductions that really gave us a much-needed one Basis for the rest gave from history. For example, we later see many references to the bonding of Rox and Frostbite, and it is implied that there is something special about it. In Episode 1, the Pact Commander actually helps save Frostbite from the Molten Alliance with Rox, resulting in the little one imprinting on Rox. With the introduction of Braham’s character, Rytlock completely ignores Braham’s legacy because Eir never mentioned having a son which started their strained relationship and why Braham is so desperate for validation and building his own legacy.
It’s little touches like this that tie the story together nicely and allow us to freely make those connections with the characters without breaking out of story immersion to question an event we were never allowed to be a part of. Having personally finished End of Dragons, I’ve never been so excited to go back and relive the upcoming conflict with Scarlet Briar. While I’ll miss feeling special with my Volunteer title (pretty much the only rare I have!), I’m so excited for others to be a part of the beginning of the Elder Dragon saga and excited always me to see new cosmetics being added Guild Wars 2. In addition to the previously unobtainable titles, we can now add more armor pieces and weapons themed after the enemies you encounter in Season 1 to our wardrobe.
With end of the dragons Closing the story nicely, Flame and Frost should definitely keep both new and experienced players busy as we speculate on what threat our world is about to face. And again it’s free! Get out there and delve into the beginnings of your legacy, Commander.
