Prime suspect arrested after woman sexually assaulted in woods

Gardaí have arrested the prime suspect after a young mother was the victim of an alleged sexual assault in a Co Kildare woodland.

The attack happened last Sunday afternoon in the wooded area of Moore Abbey near Monasterevin.

Sources said the woman was not the victim of a random attack and she knows the suspect, who is being held at Kildare Garda Station today.

Gardaí today issued an appeal to two women who had helped the woman contact her after the attack in the woods.

Officers became aware of the attack on Sunday and after making contact with the victim, she was taken to a Sexual Assault Treatment Unit (SATU) at a Dublin hospital.

The woman, aged around 20, is believed to have also been brutally beaten and sustained significant injuries in the course of the attack.

Investigators are investigating whether last Sunday’s attack took place over an extended period of time.

They are also investigating whether the victim may have been forced to go into the woods, which are popular with hikers, especially in summer.

Gardaí quickly identified the suspect and spent the last few days gathering evidence in the case before carrying out the planned arrest this morning.

The suspect is well known to officers and is considered “fickle”. Gardaí provided details of the incident this morning.

“A man in his 20s has been arrested in connection with a serious assault on a woman in his 20s that took place in Monasterevin, County Kildare on Sunday 17 July 2022,” a Garda spokesman said.

“The man is currently being held at Kildare Garda Station under the provisions of Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act 1984.

“The investigation into this incident is ongoing.

“Gardaí continues to appeal to anyone who was in the Monasterevin area on Sunday 17th between 1pm and 5:20pm and who may have footage (including dashcam) to make this footage available to them.

“Gardaí would particularly like to speak to two women who have assisted the victim.

“Anyone with information about the incident is asked to contact Kildare Garda Station on 045 527 730, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111 or any Garda Station,” he added. Prime suspect arrested after woman sexually assaulted in woods
