Prince Harry received “cast-iron assurances” his family will be protected by specialist police if he lands in the UK today.

The Duke of Sussex and his wife Meghan are flying in from California with their own personal security detail, but will be the responsibility of the Metropolitan Police once they land.

It’s only the second time in more than two years that Meghan has returned to the UK since the couple dramatically ditched their royal roles in 2020.

The couple are bringing their two children, Archie, three, and Lilibet, who turns one on Saturday.

Security sources have revealed the Met Weeks’ royal and specialist protection unit worked with the prince’s team and guaranteed taxpayer-funded officials.

Harry, 37, was embroiled in a legal battle with the government over a Home Office decision to strip him of his British security.

Lawyers for the Duke, who fled to Canada and later settled in the US to seek “financial independence”, told the High Court he “could not return home” because he feared it was too dangerous.

Sources close to the Sussex camp said Harry was always “in favor” of returning to the UK for the celebrations.

The Duke later made an offer to pay the Met to protect fully trained officers, but was told they were not “weapons for hire.”

In the US, the family is guarded by a 24-hour rotating team made up of up to 12 former special forces units and highly trained armed security professionals.

A source close to the Sussex camp said: “For Harry, it’s always been about protecting his family.

“He was in constant contact with the relevant parties and made it very clear he would not be traveling without cast-iron reassurances about his family’s safety.

“He is pleased the proper procedures are in place and they are all very much looking forward to this week’s celebrations and of course spending time with Her Majesty.”

Harry and Meghan enjoyed a brief secret meeting with the 96-year-old monarch in early April and separately a 15-minute meeting with Prince Charles before flying to the Netherlands for the Invictus Games.

The Duke and Duchess promised Her Majesty they would bring the children to her “in the near future”.

But Harry sparked fury among senior royals days later when he told an American broadcaster he had flown in to meet the Queen ahead of a trip to The Hague to make sure she was “protected” and “with the right people around her around”.

A source said: “There has been further contact between the Duke and members of his family but any talk of them planning to cause a scene or distract from the Queen’s celebrations is nonsense.

“They are here to see their family and enjoy what is undoubtedly an incredible moment in history.”

The Queen never met Lilibet, who is named after the nickname affectionately given to her grandfather King George V, and only met Archie a few times as a baby.

The Sussexes will stay at their home, Frogmore Cottage, on the Windsor estate and are set to throw “Lili” a birthday party on Saturday for the monarch to attend if she misses the Epsom Derby.

However, Buckingham Palace staff were still in the dark this week about Harry and Meghan’s plans for the anniversary weekend.

It is believed they will attend St. Paul’s Thanksgiving service on Friday and possibly the jubilee contest on Sunday.

The celebrations begin with Trooping the Color on Thursday, but the Queen has ruled that only working family members will be allowed onto Buckingham Palace’s balcony for the traditional flyby.

The Sussexes’ arrival comes as a poll released yesterday showed their popularity in the UK has fallen to an all-time low. Almost two-thirds (63%) have a negative opinion of them, YouGov’s poll found.

Courtiers have hinted the Sussexes’ arrival is “nervous” after reports they are in talks to film a reality show about their life in the US.

Camera crews from Netflix, with whom the pair have a £100m production deal, followed them throughout the Invictus games.

But only Meghan’s trusted makeup artist and close friend, Daniel Martin, has arrived in London ahead of the former ‘Suits’ actress’ arrival.

Sources close to the couple said it was “ridiculous” to suggest they were bringing the Netflix cameras, adding, “They’re not even bringing a press team. It’s all very low key.

“Anyone who is hysterical needs to have a cup of tea and calm down.”
