Prince William has said how he and the rest of the royal family “respect your decisions about your future” as the Caribbean nations desert the Queen and become republics.
In a last-minute addition to a speech on the penultimate day of his tour with his wife Kate from Belize, Jamaica and the Bahamas, the Duke of Cambridge addressed those countries that may be holding referenda to forge a new future directly.
At the Governor-General’s reception at the Baha Mar Resort in the Bahamas, the future King William said:
“I know that next year you are all looking forward to celebrating fifty years of independence – your Golden Jubilee.
“And as Jamaica celebrates 60 years of independence this year and Belize celebrates 40 years of independence last year, I want to say this: We proudly support and respect your decisions about your future.
“Relationships develop. friendship remains.”
The comments were a marked change in tone from the rest of the eight-day tour, which saw the Duke and Duchess battle a wave of anti-monarchy protests and sentiment during their first tour of the region.
It is understood the words, which relate directly to the future of nations who may yet choose to sever ties with the monarchy, added late in the day following reports in The Mirror and other major news channels including the BBC and ITV who questioned the wisdom of the tour and its success this week.
There have been claims of PR blunders, such as images of the Cambridges riding high atop a Land Rover or greeting children through metal fences.
Reviewing white privilege, it didn’t often seem to strike the right chord on the Cambridges’ first major tour since the pandemic began.
A fun trip down memory lane was the basis for this often haphazardly organized ode to a bygone era.
And William and Kate sometimes looked awkward when they weren’t doing what they do best, which is meeting and chatting with people.
It started badly with a protest by an indigenous community in Belize.
Small in number but powerful in voice, locals railed against the couple for showing an apparent lack of respect after not being consulted and allegedly demanding a helicopter land in a school field.
With placards saying “Prince William Leave Our Land,” it was the start no one would have wished for. A hastily pushed-out notice from local government explaining a misunderstanding unrelated to the future king and his wife was not enough.
William also spoke about the Queen’s platinum jubilee in the Bahamas and the “fond memories” she had of her visit to the Caribbean.
William continued: “Tonight we gather to mark another milestone.
“I am pleased to bring you all the well wishes of my grandmother, the Queen of the Bahamas, on her platinum anniversary.
“The Queen has fond memories of her many visits here in the Bahamas.
“Having spoken to people this morning, including many excited school children on the Family Islands, it is touching to see your deep admiration for the Queen and her seventy years of dedicated service to the Commonwealth.
“I also know that my grandfather, the Duke of Edinburgh, had a soft spot for the Bahamas.
“Catherine and I thought of him today as we celebrated the return of sloop sailing here by sailing off Montagu Beach. He would have been in his element!”
