The royal family is known for their love of playing pranks, giving each other Christmas presents, and generally making fun of each other whenever they can.

Many of the royals have been known to use funny nicknames when talking about each other, much like any other family.

Whether it’s Cabbage or Squeak, Gary or Stavros, the royal nicknames are hilarious and offer a glimpse into the light-hearted nature of the family behind the crown.

One young royal who has a particularly cute pet name is Princess Charlotte.

Her father, Prince William, heard it used when Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis visited the Chelsea Flower Show in 2016 to see the ‘Back to Nature Garden’ the Duchess of Cambridge created.

The Cambridge family’s visit to the famous show in 2016 gave the public an intimate look at the family as they explored the garden.

While playing on a rope swing in the corner of the garden, Prince William called out to his daughter and asked her to give him a nudge.

But instead of saying “Charlotte,” he called out “Mignonette.” The French word is said to mean “small, sweet and delicate” or “sweet”.

On a later visit to Northern Ireland, it was revealed that Kate called her daughter “Lottie” while chatting to waiting members of the crowd.

It is royal tradition that while a royal is at school or working professionally, he is known by his first name and uses his parents’ title as his last name. This means that Princess Charlotte is known to her classmates and teachers as Charlotte Cambridge.

Princess Charlotte is known at school as Charlotte Cambridge

Ditto for her older brother as he is known at school as George Cambridge and younger brother Louis is likely to use the same style when going to Willcocks Nursery in Kensington.

Prince William and Prince Harry also adopted this tradition during their training and military service. Both took the surname of Wales after their father’s title of Prince of Wales.

However, the tradition of using a parent’s title as a surname is not something every king chooses. As the official surname of the royal family is Mountbatten-Windsor, many royal children use this surname at school.

For example, Princess Beatrice and Princess Eugenie were known to use this style instead of being known as Beatrice and Eugenie York.

The same goes for Prince Harry and Meghan’s children, Archie and Lilibet. Instead of using the Sussex surname (after their Duchy of Sussex), they chose to give them the surname Mountbatten-Windsor.
