Comforting the partner of a police officer who died after being attacked by pro-Trump rioters during the Capitol riots, Prince William sent a moving letter.

The Duke of Cambridge wrote to Sandra Garza, girlfriend of Brian Sicknick, 42, after the officer’s death following the January 6 riot last year.

Sicknick was one of the officers on duty who outnumbered thousands of rioting Trump supporters who stormed the US Capitol as they attempted to overthrow democracy.

During the violence, the officer was sprayed with a chemical and collapsed a day later. He suffered a stroke and died.

In the letter, Prince William, 39, wrote to Garza: “Please forgive me for interfering, but I wanted to write and let you know how sorry I am for the death of your partner Brian.”

The Duke said he saw footage of “the harrowing events at the Capitol” and wanted to pay tribute to Sicknick’s “patriotism and selflessness.”

He added: “Brian appeared to have behaved bravely on duty and despite sustaining injuries continued to do his utmost to protect those inside.”

William said he hoped there was a small consolation for Garza in knowing that “thanks to law enforcement officers like Brian, the situation has not escalated any further and democracy has been upheld.”

“I know words cannot bring you any comfort at this horrific time, but I wanted to let you know that my thoughts are with Brian’s family,” he continued.

In unveiling the letter to CNN, Garza revealed that former President Donald Trump had not sent her a message of condolences.

“Trump doesn’t care about law enforcement or Brian, and yet Prince William took the time to honor me and Brian,” she said.

She then said of the prince: “I just think he’s a beautiful, wonderful person.”

The release of William’s tribute to Sicknick, which was dated September 2021 but only recently reached Garza.

Two other officers took their own lives in the days after the riots, and more than 150 police officers were injured – including one officer who suffered a heart attack and others who suffered traumatic brain injuries and permanent disabilities.
