Queen’s Jubilee: Princess Anne arrives at the Epsom Derby

A beaming Princess Anne has stepped in for the Queen at the Epsom Derby while the 96-year-old monarch watches the horse racing from home.

It was announced yesterday that Her Majesty, who is celebrating her Platinum Jubilee, will not be attending the event today – but a commemorative race card has been sent to her to follow the action.

Anne arrived in procession at Surrey racecourse with her husband Vice-Admiral Sir Tim Laurence just before 1pm.

The procession included her children Zara Tindall, who was with her husband, former rugby player Mike, and Peter Phillips, who was also dating her friend Lindsay Wallace.

Crowds cheered and waved union flags as they entered the course, with Anne seen smiling.

She then appeared in the royal box while the national anthem was played by a band. Crowds cheered and waved at the princess, who grinned and chatted with her husband.

Then Anne waved and laughed while thanking those around her for welcoming her.

The jubilee celebrations took place in the Queen’s absence, with 40 jockeys, having ridden for the owner-breeder, donning royal racing silks and forming an honor guard before the national anthem was sung.

Five of the monarch’s former racehorses were also paraded, and a selection of hats inspired by the seven decades of her reign were on display.

Her hopes of winning the Derby this year were dashed in early May when her favorite horse Reach For The Moon and two others were withdrawn.

Queen-owned Thoroughbreds have won four of the five flat racing classics, the 1,000 Guineas and 2,000 Guineas, the Oaks and the St Leger, evading only the Derby.

It comes as fellow royals swarmed to the various nations of the UK during the Platinum Jubilee weekend.

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge were joined by Prince George and Princess Charlotte for a special anniversary visit to Cardiff Castle.

But it seems their youngest child, Prince Louis, has stayed at home today, although he stole the show on Thursday with his adorable appearance on the balcony of Buckingham Palace alongside his great-grandmother the Queen.

George, eight, and Charlotte, seven, were surprise arrivals on their first official visit to Wales.

The couple and their two older children watch rehearsals and meet some of the acts attending a concert at the castle to mark the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee, including Welsh singer Bonnie Tyler.

Meanwhile, Prince Edward and Sophie Wessex meet with children attending multicultural street performances in Belfast.

They have also attended arts and crafts sessions and spoken to people who have shared their personal memories of meeting the Queen.
