Indie MMORPG profane is back on track after releasing their roadmap last week detailing the numerous alpha initiatives that the team at INSANE intends to fix before the end of the year. With that in mind, the team released a new teaser showing the outfits of the Portinus culture, just one of many from the tropical region of Semisus.
The NPCs and the environmental ambience of an MMORPG are the quintessence of making virtual worlds feel alive. profane want to do more than just throw some NPCs into the game.
Hey guys! Let us introduce you to some of the faces (or clothing items) you will see in the tropical regions of Semisus! These are the 3D models of a fisherwoman and a guardian of the Portinus culture. pic.twitter.com/G1xstKq5YH

factions one profane will have NPCs with their own jobs doing their own specific tasks to maintain the appearance of a living world. Aside from the brief Twitter post where the video was posted, INSANE went to their discord to explain their thought process in creating quasi-functional NPCs.
“(The NPCs) will be a familiar sight for most settlements of this culture and we wanted to talk about their role in the game and what we hope to achieve with these NPCs.
To help populate the world and bring life to the many factions in the game, we’re adding NPCs with mundane tasks (e.g. a regular villager or a fisherman) who perform basic activities to keep their villages running . It helps keep the narrative of the place alive by seeing them at work on a daily basis and giving space for immersion. We also want them to fit into Portinus’ unique identity, and we want players to be able to identify their culture based on their clothing, behavior, etc.”

INSANE went on to describe the use of guards in their cities. The type of guard you encounter may depend on the type of faction that rules the city. A sandbox MMO that allows players to attack each other at will, the team intends to use its karma system in a variety of ways, some of which provide benefits for positive karma, while other players could derive factional benefits from negative karma.
“Some will enjoy welcoming players with negative karma into their territory and might attack players with positive karma right away! The reverse will also happen, so some settlements will be friendlier to players with positive karma. On the other hand, some may hate every player and attack everyone. And some might not care at all. It’s important to understand that guards will be there to add interest to their own faction, which may not line up with what you want. So always pay attention.”

It sounds like there are guards inside profane will play a very important role in the faction system. According to last week’s roadmap, NPCs and the faction system are still in a very early stage of development, so we hope this system will evolve over time.
