Calculating psychopaths with inflated egos are drawn to Bitcoin investing, according to scientists.
A team of experts recently surveyed more than 500 people to uncover personality traits common among crypto nuts.
They found that investors exhibit signs of the “dark tetrad,” a group of four unsavory traits consisting of narcissism, Machiavellianism, psychopathy, and sadism.
In plain language, this means that dark tetrads have inflated self-esteem and take pleasure in the pain of others.
They also find it difficult to empathize with others and are smart and manipulative.
Scientists from Queensland University of Technology described their findings in research published in the journal personality and individual differences earlier this month.
They asked 566 people to fill out personality surveys and answer questions about their attitude towards crypto.
Of the participants, one in four said they owned crypto, and two-thirds expressed an interest in crypto investing.
All four dark tetrad traits correlated with a propensity to invest, each for their own reasons.
According to the researchers, dark tetrads are attracted to crypto in part because they are willing to take risks.
Digital assets like Bitcoin are notoriously volatile, and the feast-or-hunger nature of investing is particularly alluring to some.
The lead author of the study, Dr. Di Wang, enrolled The conversation: “Dark tetrad traits are ‘dark’ because of their ‘evil’ traits: Extreme selfishness and exploitation of others without empathy.
“The Dark Tetrad is also often associated with risk-taking behavior.”
The link between the traits and an affinity for Bitcoin is also fueled by the fact that the currency has no central authority, meaning it is separate from banks and governments.
Machiavellians — who are good at deception and take a calculated approach to achieving goals — like crypto “mainly because they distrust politicians and government agencies,” said Dr. Wang.
He added, “Many crypto supporters believe that governments are corrupt, and crypto avoids government corruption.”
Narcissists, on the other hand, are attracted to technology because they tend to focus on the positive side of life.
Researchers found that narcissists like crypto because of their high level of confidence in the future and confidence that their own lives will get better.
Finally, impulsive psychopaths and sadists like crypto because they seek thrills and fear missing out on the rewards of investing.
“For them, perhaps both the joy of seeing another’s pain and the fear of missing out are associated with selfishness,” wrote Dr. Wang.
If you’re a crypto fan yourself, fear not – investing doesn’t suddenly make you angry.
“We only looked at a subset of people who are interested in crypto and have these traits,” said Dr. Wang.
“If you happen to be an owner of bitcoin or other cryptos, you may or may not issue them.”
