One player turned just £1 into £20,000 when he picked seven winners from his morning paper.

Dennis Waldron correctly predicted the outcome of every race at Nottingham to earn him a huge payout. The Birmingham pensioner called it a “bet of a lifetime” as he stunned bookmaker Betfred with the selection.

The incredible run at the Saturday meeting began with Elixsoft (9-2) comfortably holding her rivals in the first apprentice handicap at bay. Next came the 11-8 favorites from the Hebrides, who took a narrow lead while Tees Spirit (2-1f) came out on top in the third match of the day.

Grand Scheme (4-1) and Pledge Of Honor (6-1) continued Waldron’s epic run of form at the Colwick Park venue. Then, to his astonishment, Ermin Street (13-2) was number six winner and Midnight Train (3-1) was held by a short head in the final on May 7th.

Waldron told the Daily Star: “I’ve been with Betfred for 17 years and take a bet most days – but only a small amount, usually a pound or so. I usually spend a few hours studying the form in the Daily Star, but for some reason it only took me 20 minutes that day.

Every morning the pensioner gets his newspaper delivered and he makes his choice. His supervisor then gets his slip and takes it to the local betting shop. Overall, his total winnings came to £20,598.

Betfred boss Fred Done said: “Dennis really grabbed my pocket with this one. He has been with us for many years and I am over the moon that he has won so much with such a small bet.”
