‘Pursuit’ Review: An Action Thriller Targeted for Bargain Box

The Grenades play a major role in “Pursuit,” starring John Cusack and Emile Hirsch as estranged father and son. If the leads of those agents make you curious, fix your curiosity. In a bygone era, this action-thriller, directed by Brian Skiba, would go straight from post-production to a bargain bin at a dingy video auditorium on a dark alley where rats swarm.

As the movie opens, Rick (Hirsch), a hacker, stares at the computer screen. He is trying to locate his wife, who has been kidnapped by a drug cartel, a syndicate to which his father, Jack (Cusack), is involved. In pursuit of answers, Rick turns off the screen, picks up his submachine gun, and shoots where it hurts. Apparently, he’s not a late hacker but a guy with facial tattoos and a skill set honed as the son of a crime boss. When he plunges into a drug deal, he becomes the arch-enemy of Mike Breslin (Jake Manley), a middle-aged NYPD detective.

Before long, the action shifts to Arkansas, where a gang boss tasks his only son to hunt down Rick. Detective Breslin also went to Arkansas; His pregnant wife is a gang victim, and he and Rick have made a bargain.

There will be good cop, bad cop and a tough deputy sheriff. There will be blood splatter. The oven in which Jack always grills steaks will be among the casualties. And, with its themes of grieving husbands, bad fathers, and bad sons, “Pursuit” will try to look as if some kind of realistic thought has been put into the script.

Rated R for gun violence, drug content and the carnage of a perfect outdoor grill. Running time: 1 hour 37 minutes. In cinemas and available to rent or buy on Google Play, Vudu and other streaming platforms and pay TV operators.
