In a speech, the President of Ukraine drew parallels between Russia’s invasion of his country and National Socialism.

Volodymyr Zelenskyy described Russia’s invasion of Ukraine as “a bloody reconstruction of Nazism” during a video address commemorating World War II.

In the video, which contained archival World War II footage interspersed with black-and-white clips of the Russian invasion, he accused Vladimir Putin’s forces of mimicking Nazi “atrocities”.

Standing in front of buildings destroyed by Russian shelling, Mr Zelensky said: “We didn’t last even a century. Our ‘Never Again’ lasted only 77 years.

“We missed the evil. It was reborn. Again and now.

“All countries and nations supporting Ukraine today understand that. Despite the animal’s new mask, they recognized him.

“Because, unlike many others, they remember what our ancestors fought for and against.”

He continued, “The evil has returned, in a different uniform, under different slogans, but for the same purpose.”

On February 24, as Russia began its invasion, Moscow claimed that its offensive was driven in part by an attempt to “denazify” Ukraine.

Putin picked up this thread in his own speech, in which he congratulated former nations of the Soviet Union 77 years after the defeat of Nazi Germany and declared that “as in 1945, victory will be ours.”

Officials in Ukraine are concerned that Russia will step up its attack to coincide with Monday’s Victory Day celebrations.

Mr Zelensky called for solidarity from European countries, including the UK, France and the Netherlands, drawing parallels between the Nazi bombing of their cities and the shelling of Ukraine’s urban areas.

A Russian airstrike targeted a school in eastern Ukraine on Saturday. Local officials fear the bombing has killed more than 60 people.

According to Serhiy Haidai, the governor of Ukraine’s Luhansk region, about 90 villagers from Bilohorivka near the frontline in the hotly contested Donbass region had taken refuge in the building.
