Putin sees the US as the main threat

Russian President Vladimir Putin on Sunday signed a new naval doctrine that identifies the US as his main threat and outlines Russia’s plans to become a major naval power.

Speaking during Russia’s Navy Day, Putin praised the country’s Zircon hypersonic cruise missiles and warned that his military is ready to take out potential attackers.

In the 55-page naval doctrine, Russia declared “the US strategic policy of dominating the world’s oceans” and the NATO alliance’s rapprochement with Russia’s borders as Russia’s main threat.

While the doctrine recognizes that Russia does not have enough naval bases, the country stands ready to use its military to address problems in the world’s oceans when other tools are exhausted.

Russia plans to develop and expand ties with powers like India, Saudi Arabia, Iraq, Iran and other regions to expand its sea power.

“Guided by this doctrine, the Russian Federation will firmly and resolutely defend its national interests in the world’s seas, and sufficient sea power will guarantee its safety and security,” the document said.

Meanwhile, delivery of the Zircon hypersonic cruise missiles to the Admiral Gorshkov frigate is due to begin within months, but Putin said the location of the weapons would vary depending on Russian interests.

“The most important thing here is the capability of the Russian Navy,” Putin said. “It is capable of a lightning-fast response to anyone who decides to violate our sovereignty and freedom.”

Putin discussed a number of issues in his speech, but made no mention of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
