Putin threatens Ukraine’s ‘statehood’, says no-fly zone would be interpreted as an act of war – POLITICO

Russian President Vladimir Putin on Saturday criticized the Ukrainian resistance and tried to blame the government in Kyiv for the war of aggression he is waging against Ukraine.

“If they continue as before, they will question the future of Ukrainian statehood,” he said called. “And if that happens, it will be entirely on their conscience.”

He also warned that imposing a no-fly zone over Ukraine – a move Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has asked the West to do – would be seen by the Kremlin as a declaration of war on Russia.

“Any step in this direction will be seen by us as involvement in the armed conflict,” he said. “Right this second, we’re going to consider them participants … and it wouldn’t matter which members they are. It is precisely this risk that is why NATO has firmly opposed establishing a no-fly zone over Ukraine.

Zelenskyy early Sunday tweeted that he spoke to US President Joe Biden about “the issues of security, financial support for Ukraine and the continuation of sanctions against Russia”.

The Financial Times reported on Sunday that the US and Poland are organizing to supply Kyiv with Russian-made jets, part of the Warsaw fleet, which Ukrainian pilots know how to fly, which in turn would be replaced by Washington-made F-16s.

In a video speech with a battle cry on Saturday, Zelenskyy called on his army and citizens to launch a counterattack against the invading Russian forces.

“You must go out and drive this evil out of our cities,” he said called.
