Ukraine: The Sky News team comes under heavy fire near Kyiv

A British journalist was injured after being shot in the back when he and a cameraman were ambushed by Russian soldiers while covering the invasion of Ukraine.

Sky reporter Stuart Ramsey and cameraman Richie Mockler were in a town about 20 miles from Kyiv when a round of bullets was aimed in their direction.

Footage shows them approaching a checkpoint as they headed toward the town of Bucha when soldiers began firing.

Russian military vehicles were reportedly blown up in Bucha on Thursday.

Mr Mockler took two rounds on his body armor while Mr Ramsey was wounded after the shooting.

Stuart wrote: “There was a small explosion out of nowhere and I saw something hit the car and blow out a tyre. We rolled to a stop.

“The first shot shattered the windshield. Cameraman Richie Mockler has crouched in the footwell of the passenger. Then we were fully attacked.

“Bullets shot through the whole car, tracers, ball lightning, windshield glass, plastic seats, the steering wheel and dashboard were all shattered.”

Stuart continued: “We didn’t know at the time, but the Ukrainians later told us that we were ambushed by a Russian saboteur reconnaissance squad. It was professional, the shells kept hitting the car – they didn’t miss.

“At that point we thought it was a Ukrainian army checkpoint firing at us and that it was a mistake, so we started shouting that we were journalists, but the rounds kept coming.

“And then I got hit in the lower back. ‘I got hit!’ I shouted.”

The group managed to escape the vehicle before jumping down a 40-foot embankment while fire rained down on them.

Stuart finished: “We regrouped downstairs. The five of us were alive. We couldn’t believe it.

“We were undoubtedly shocked. But glad to be alive. Martin told me it’s a miracle one of us got out, let alone all five.”
