Queen Elizabeth II: National Bereavement Guide for Business and Sport

Whether or not anything closes after the monarch’s death is left to the discretion of individual institutions, although guidance suggests the country could close on Monarch’s Day Queen’s funeral.

The government will allow organizations to decide whether to close down during the period of national mourning.

This is the guidance issued by the Cabinet Office for various areas.

Sports

It is not necessary to postpone or cancel sporting events. The guidance said: “As a mark of respect, organizations may wish to consider canceling or postponing events or closing venues on the day of the state funeral.

“As a mark of respect and in keeping with the tone of national mourning, organizers may wish to observe a period of silence and/or play the national anthem at the start of events or sporting events and players may wish to wear black armbands.”

businesses and public services

The guidance states: “Organizations are not required to cease trading during the national mourning period.
“Depending on the nature and location of their business and the tone of planned events, some businesses may wish to consider closing or postponing events, particularly on the day of the state funeral.

“But that’s at the discretion of individual companies.”

Public services will continue as usual, although there may be some changes in service availability.

churches and community events

The guidance reads: “Many community organisations, including places of worship, local authorities and charities, will organize events to commemorate Her Majesty’s life and ministry.

“This may include holding reflection services (or similar) as well as allowing people with no religious beliefs to pay their respects. Local authorities will support the coordination of local events so please check with them or your local place of worship for more details.”

entertainment events

The guidance for large entertainment events is like that for sports.

There is no obligation to cancel or postpone events during the period of national mourning.
