With the Queen’s Jubilee the talk of many people and Brits looking forward to a four-day weekend away, you might be wondering how you can act a little more like a member of the royal family in your everyday life.
And it turns out there’s a very simple change you can make to your daily routine that will instantly make you appear a little more “decent.”
Liz Wyse, an etiquette consultant for Debrett’s, has shared her expertise with The Mirror, explaining how the Queen and other women in the royal family, like the Duchess of Cambridge, follow a certain rule when it comes to their knees.
Liz spoke about the etiquette training Kate Middleton and Meghan Markle will have received when they married Prince William and Harry.

She explained how both of them were taught the “correct” way of sitting, namely with their knees closed.
“I’m pretty sure they were taught to sit. Crossing your legs is definitely not customary, and if you’ve seen photos of seated royal ladies, they always have their knees together,” she said.
“Sometimes they sit with their legs to the side or with their ankles crossed.
“I think crossed legs are considered pretty inelegant.”
The expert went on to say that a similar unwritten rule is followed when royal women step out of a car.
Here, too, the knees remain together, so that a targeted “pivoting” movement is required.
Liz explains: “You always have your knees together. You don’t do anything that makes your skirt ride up.
“So to get out of a car you definitely have to turn your butt and somehow move your feet out of the car so that the leg is never unsightly exposed.”
Sounds a bit complicated – definitely a move we need to practice a few times!
