Body language expert Judi James said the Queen used “all her willpower to avoid a public meltdown”.

According to a body language expert, “The Queen struggled not to be overwhelmed with tears” as she stood on the balcony of Buckingham Palace on the final day of her Platinum Jubilee celebrations.

Judi James said the monarch narrowed her eyes and sucked her lips, suggesting that for the first time in her life she was “using all her willpower to avoid a breakdown”.

As tens of thousands of people poured into the mall, the Queen stepped onto the balcony on Sunday night after the platinum contest, which told the story of her life and the nation, with an eccentric, funny and imaginative carnival character display.

She was flanked by her three heirs – son, grandson and great-grandson – who offered a glimpse into the future of the monarchy.

Mrs James said that MailOnline : “Forget some of the rare instances where the Queen has been recorded as crying in the past, it was often just about wet eyes that can be triggered by the cold weather or even old age.

“That balcony appearance provided more congruent evidence that she may have been struggling not to be overwhelmed by tears.

“Her eyes narrowed, with a lift of the lower eye, and she sucked in her lips to indicate that she was using all her willpower to avoid collapsing in public for the first time in her life.”

After erupting in public affection during her balcony appearance, the Queen said she was “humbled and deeply touched” by so many people taking part in her 70-year reign.

The Duchess of Cornwall, patron of the Big Lunch, estimated that up to 18 million people could have attended the anniversary street parties and the Queen expressed her hope that this “renewed sense of togetherness” will be felt for years to come.

The monarch said in her message: “When it comes to celebrating seventy years as your Queen, there is no guide you can follow. It’s really a first. But I was humbled and deeply touched that so many people chose Streets to celebrate my platinum anniversary.

“While I may not have personally attended every event, my heart went out to you all; and I remain committed to serving you to the best of my ability, supported by my family.

“I was inspired by the kindness, joy and connection that has been so evident over the last few days and I hope this renewed sense of togetherness will be felt for many years to come.

“I sincerely thank you for your well wishes and for the role you all played in these happy celebrations.”

The Queen had not been seen since making two balcony appearances on the first day of the anniversary celebrations when Trooping the Color took place, and the Duchess of Cambridge later said she found the day enjoyable but tiring.

But the Queen looked relaxed on the balcony as the festivities drew to a close, leaning on a walking stick that’s now a routine aid with her mobility issues, and waving to the crowd.
