Damian Lewis paid tribute to late wife Helen McCrory as he announced they were both “delighted” after the actor was included on the Queen’s Birthday Honors List by CBE.
The 51-year-old television, film and stage star has been honored for his television and charity services.
During the containment of the coronavirus, Lewis and McCrory have been supporting Feed NHS – which he co-founded – a fundraiser to donate food from high-end restaurants to NHS staff, and by April 2020 they has raised around £1 million for charity.
He was previously honored as an OBE in the 2014 Birthday Honors for television acting services and his new honor comes after his wife, acclaimed actress McCrory, passed away in April. 2021 at the age of 52 after a battle with cancer.
Lewis said: “It is a great honor to be awarded the CBE on the Queen’s Birthday Honors List for services to drama and for the charitable work I have done over the years and over the years. translated with my late wife, Helen McCrory.
“Thank you very much. She and I are both very emotional.”
Lewis and McCrory have worked with restaurant Leon and other companies such as hospitality provider BaxterStorey to help deliver meals to NHS workers on their NHS Feed initiative.
The JustGiving page shows they have hit £1,262,162 of their £2m target, which was initially set at £1m but surpassed this total in April 2020.
Lewis is known for his roles in the HBO miniseries Band of Brothers as Amry Major Richard Winters, Nicholas Brody in the Showtime series Homeland, and Henry VIII in Wolf Hall.
He stepped away from his most recent famous role in Billions last year, where he played aspiring hedge fund manager Bobby Axelrod in five series.
Lewis graduated from the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in 1993 before joining the Royal Shakespeare Company.
It was during Jonathan Kent’s production of Hamlet that Lewis landed his big hit, playing Laertes, and was discovered by award-winning director Steven Spielberg, who cast him in Band of Brothers.
In 2010, he became a commercial justice ambassador for the Christian Aid charity.
McCrory, who is known for playing Elizabeth “Polly” Gray in Peaky Blinders and Narcissa Malfoy in the final three Harry Potter films, has died at home in London. They have two children together.
