Queen’s Piper to help end the funeral with a traditional bagpipe

The Queen’s Piper will help wrap up her state funeral with a performance of the traditional Sleep, Dearie, Sleep.

ipe Major Paul Burns, the monarch’s personal player at the time of her death, will perform when the service ends and the congregation stands back, before the coffin leaves Westminster Abbey for Windsor.

Major Burns of the Royal Regiment of Scotland is the 17th holder of the post, established in 1843 during the reign of Queen Victoria.

Before serving, Matthew Jorysz, the monastery’s assistant organist, will play a series of pieces including Sir Edward Elgar’s Elegy Op 58, Sir Peter Maxwell Davies’ Beliequi Domum Meum, and Malcolm Williamson’s Fantasy On O Paradise.

He will also play Romanza (5 in D Symphony) by Ralph Vaughan Williams, choreographed by Robert Quinney.

Sub-organists will play two pieces by Elgar – Andante Espressivo (Sonata in G Op 28) and Sospiri Op 70.

Hymns sung during the ceremony will include The Lord My Shepherd, The Day Thou Gavest, Lord, Is Ended and Love Divine, All Loves Excelling.

The Lord My Shepherd, featuring lyrics from Psalm 23, was featured at the Queen’s wedding to the Duke of Edinburgh in 1947 and is said to be her favorite song.

After Maj Burns’ performance of Sleep, Dearie, Sleep, the supporting artist will play Johann Sebastian Bach’s Fantasia at the C Minor as the coffin procession begins.

During Wednesday’s procession carrying the Queen’s coffin from Buckingham Palace to Westminster Hall for her to lie in state, a number of different marches were carried out.

These include Beethoven’s Funeral Days 1-3 and Chopin’s Funeral Journey, both of which can be heard again on Monday.
