Rachel Furness is putting her career in Northern Ireland on hold for personal reasons

Northern Ireland’s record goalscorer Rachel Furness has announced she is taking a break from international football for personal reasons.

The 34-year-old Liverpool midfielder has scored 38 times in 88 games for Northern Ireland.

She started in all three of the team’s games at this summer’s Euros in England, where they played in a major tournament for the first time.

Furness said in a statement posted to social media: “A decision I found incredibly difficult, but one I believe is the right one.

“I have informed the Football Association of Ireland that I will not be making myself available for the upcoming games and training camps for the foreseeable future for personal reasons.

“I would like to put it on record that I am not retiring from international football and I hope to make myself available again in the future. I wish the girls all the best.”

Kenny Shiels’ Northern Ireland are back in action with a World Cup qualifier away against Luxembourg on 2 September and Latvia four days later.

Newly promoted Liverpool begin their Women’s Super League campaign on September 11 with a trip to Reading.
