Studies show that racial inequality is one of the biggest barriers to student success in school. The British education system today is racially unequal, leading to disadvantages. This is reflected in the demographics of our schools when you consider that a third of pupils in both primary and secondary education are from ethnic minority backgrounds – but according to a UCL study 46% of schools have no ethnic minority teachers

If we take a closer look, we can see that black/Caribbean students are more likely to be excluded than white students. We see black girls being deported twice as often as white girls. Reports show that the education system is not only racially unequal in terms of the proportion of teachers with black, Asian or minority ethnic backgrounds, but also that “racism runs deep in school education.” This is reflected in the views of 49% of young black people who believe racism is the number one obstacle to success in school.

Seven out of eight black students felt they needed to change their hair to look more like others at school. 95% of students reported having experienced racist language at school.

Many students say racist comments without realizing the implications, thinking it’s a joke and not a big deal, and teachers dismiss that very easily. Never dismiss reports of racism or bullying – make it clear that you take this seriously and acknowledge their feelings. Listen to them and include them in your answer. Encourage all staff and students to be vigilant against bullying, prejudice and abuse — whether face-to-face or online — and to report any concerns.
