Radio 1 presenter Greg James opened the show live on air

BBC Radio 1 presenter Greg James has been booted live on air from his breakfast show and replaced.

Greg was hosting his show near the Hove Lagoon as part of the Radio 1 Games when he was told his colleague Scott would be hosting from London.

A statement read on the air by the station said: “Radio 1 is kicking Greg James out of the Radio 1 Breakfast Show, effective immediately.

“Greg was halfway through presenting this morning’s show from Brighton but is currently being removed from the studio.

β€œGreg lost his show on Radio 1. He has a chance to win it back by completing a challenge.

β€œAt this moment a new team is taking over the show from BBC HQ. Until further notice, Radio 1 will be Breakfast The Scott Mills Show.”

To win back his presenting duties, Greg must complete the Radio 1 Giant Jigsaw – a jigsaw puzzle of the Radio 1 logo broken into 20 pieces and scattered in hidden locations across the UK.

The audience must help Greg find all 20 pieces, bring them to Brighton and fit them into a puzzle frame floating in the Hove Lagoon.

Speaking to BBC Newscast, Greg said: “There’s really no point in it other than to be silly for the sake of being silly.

“It’s also to see how far the audience will take us on something like this and to have a bit of a distraction for halftime.”

Several tracks have already been spotted, with one even appearing in the studio for the BBC’s coverage of last night’s England v Spain game on the Amex.

Greg told Newscast: “The first was at John O’Groats – there was a guy on holiday from Australia who found him on the famous signpost.”

Others have been found at Land’s End and Wrexham.

Greg also said fans of his show came out to greet him during his quest to find the pieces of the puzzle.

“It’s nice to be in a place where a lot of people walk by and say, ‘I’ll listen to you on the way to work,'” he said.
