Rae Allen has died peacefully in his sleep at the age of 95.

The Tony Award-winning actress, best known for her roles on The Sopranos, All In the Family and Damn Yankees, died early Wednesday morning.

Described as a “force of nature” by many who knew her, New York-born Rae Julia Theresa Abruzzo had a highly successful acting career that spanned several decades.

Rae began her acting career in Broadway theater productions after graduating from the American Academy of Dramatic Arts in 1947.

In 1955, she received her first Tony nomination for Best Actress in a Play for her role as Gloria in Damn Yankees.

She was later nominated again in 1967 for her role in Traveler Without Luggage. She won the award in 1971 for her role in And Miss Reardon Drinks a Little.

In 1958, she portrayed her role as Gloria on the big screen when she was part of the film adaptation of Damn Yankees.

She was also a TV show staple throughout the ’60s, starring in popular series like The Untouchables, Car 54, Where Are You? and the Patty Duke Show.

She has had a number of guest appearances on shows over the years including The Greatest American Hero, Lou Grant and Hill Street Blues.

She had another role on Soap, where she took on the role of judge Betty Small.

Elsewhere in her impressive resume, she appeared as Mrs. Sokol on Seinfeld before playing Aunt Quintina Blundetto on The Sopranos.

By the turn of the millennium, she landed roles in a number of major series, including Grey’s Anatomy and NYPD Blue, while appearing on the big screen in films such as Stargate and A League of Their Own.

She also starred in Where’s Poppa and Reign Over Me.

Following news of her death, fans began posting messages of condolence on social media.

One Twitter user wrote: “Rest in Peace Rae Allen.”

She is survived by nieces Laura and Betty Cosgrove, and her friends April Webster and Lisa Ann Gold, whom she considered her adoptive family.
