Rafael Nadal joins Borna Coric after returning from injury

Rafael Nadal has been kicked out of the Western and Southern Opens after going down against Borna Coric in three grueling sets.

The 36-year-old Spaniard was pushed to his limits and beyond in his first match since a stomach tear forced him out of Wimbledon.

The Croatian Coric, who also pulled out of Wimbledon through injury, started strong against the world number three, absorbing Nadal’s best shots and returning them right away.

Both men saved two set points before the 25-year-old took first blood in a lengthy tie-break.

Nadal then rallied in the second and used his lone break point opportunity to force a crucial decider.

Ultimately, however, he couldn’t match his younger opponent in the third step, giving up an early break that drove Coric to a 7-6 (9), 4-6, 6-3 win in Cincinnati. Rafael Nadal joins Borna Coric after returning from injury
