Rail strike affects rail services in Sussex

TODAY was the first of rail workers’ planned strikes over the weekend.

Thousands of workers across the country will go on strike in a long-running dispute over wages, jobs and working conditions.

It started today and there will be another strike on Saturday 20th August.

Southern and Thameslink are warning of travel disruptions on Friday 19th August and Sunday 21st August. Both operators warn against traveling only if necessary.

Mick Lynch, general secretary of the Rail, Shipping and Transport Union (RMT), said he feared “political interference” would mean it would not be possible to find a solution as workers stage another rail strike.

Speaking to ITV’s Good Morning Britain on Thursday from Euston Station, he said the union had worked with Network Rail and the train operators but “the rift between us is still there”.

“We have to find a way to bridge that, but I’m afraid we can’t do that because of political interference in public transport and the Treasury Department,” he said.

“We also have a dispute with London Underground tomorrow – which boils down more to the fact that funding has been cut by the railway and that means an attack on railway workers across the country and I think a lot of workers are suffering at the moment.

“They are not getting a clear agreement but we will continue to work with the companies to reach a negotiated solution and as soon as we can do that we will put it to our members and hopefully we can get the railways back to offering this service to public needs.” “.

He later added: “We’re going to work those issues out, but what we need is management to be able to negotiate and I think that’s partly caught up in the election or selection process of Tory leadership that they go through and I think.” , because these candidates have both veered to the extreme right in this country, it is very difficult to find the ability to reach an agreement.”
