Rail strike paralyzes rail services across Sussex

RAIL services across the county have been paralyzed in the latest in a series of mass workers’ strikes.

Members of four unions, including the RMT, went on strike, causing the worst rail disruption of the year so far.

Southern and Thameslink services are facing significant disruption with no services to and from Littlehampton, Bognor, Seaford, Eastbourne and Hastings.

The commuter misery is exacerbated by construction work, which is also taking place today between Brighton and Three Bridges with a rail replacement bus service.

The latest day of strikes follows several strikes by rail workers in recent months amid an ongoing wage dispute with unions demanding a real wage increase amid rising inflation.

RMT general secretary Mick Lynch has written to Transport Secretary Anne-Marie Trevelyan urging her to “take urgent steps to facilitate a negotiated settlement” after the union said the latest figures showed rail bosses benefiting from state tax cuts.

The union claimed that the tax cuts announced by the Chancellor last week could make railway bosses up to £61,000 a year, more than most RMT members will make in a year.

Speaking on the BBC Breakfast, Mr Lynch said: “While our members suffer from wage crunch, the bosses in this industry absolutely rake it in.

“This is an outrage and I’m sure the people of the UK will be outraged by it.”

The disruption is also expected to affect services tomorrow, affecting those traveling to London for tomorrow’s London Marathon, with another strike day planned for October 8.

Angie Doll, Chief Operating Officer for Govia Thameslink Railway, which operates the Southern and Thameslink services, said: “We very much regret having to advise our passengers to only travel on Saturdays 1st and 8th October , if absolutely necessary.

“Strike action means that train services across the country will be severely curtailed and many routes will not run at all.

“We urge unions to work with the industry and find a solution.”
