Rail strikes December: Dates announced for Christmas strikes

A fresh set of Dates for rail strikes have been announced as Network Rail workers will be moving out over the Christmas period.

The strikes follow ongoing disputes over wages, jobs and working conditions.

members of railway, shipping and transport The union (RMT) will continue its two 48-hour strikes over the coming week, in addition to a strike from December 24 at 6pm to December 27 at 6am.

It comes as the union recommended members reject the latest offer from network rail.

The new strike dates will only affect part of passenger traffic as trains will not run on December 25th and 26th but mainly disrupt planned construction work on the railway.

Although new dates have been announced, the RMT has canceled some planned actions, with the overtime ban now being lifted over the Christmas period.

Next week, timetables will be reduced by 80%, with the first strikes taking place on December 13th and 14th.

The union had received an offer from the Rail Delivery Group (RDG) earlier this week, which offered two pay rises of 4% over two years, the closure of ticket offices and changes to work schedules and more.

Referring to the new strike dates, RMT General Secretary Mick Lynch said it was “regrettable that the union was forced to take this action”.

He said: “We remain available for talks to resolve these issues, but we will not bow to employer and government pressure to the detriment of our members.”
