The reverse of the new 50p coin features five rainbows and the colors of the Pride flag. The other side has the traditional image of the Queen’s face
The Royal Mint has released a new 50p commemorative coin to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Pride movement in the UK.
The coin features five rainbows and the colors of the Pride flag on the reverse. The other side has the traditional image of the Queen.
It is available now through The Royal Mint website and includes gold, silver, and brilliant uncirculated versions.
Starting at £10 for a brilliant uncirculated version, rising to £2,185 for a gold proof Piedfort coin.
Five million coins will enter general circulation later this year – at which point you’re more likely to find one in your pocket change.
The coin was designed by Dominique Holmes, an artist, author and LGBTQ+ activist based in east London.
She said: “Working on the scale of a 50p piece was interesting for me as I’m used to working on a larger scale.
“The main challenge was to ensure that the important messages of the protest and visibility on the coin are clearly understood.

“I always had to have a 50p by my side while I was working on keeping my sketches in check! Seeing the design and the message of protest and pride on the coin itself was quite moving.
“Growing up in the UK in the 80’s and 90’s I never saw such positive LGBTQ+ representation and I am very proud to have worked on something that marked such a historic moment for the LGBTQ+ community and so publicly celebrates and commemorates the Pride movement.
“This is a significant milestone in the fight for LGBTQ+ rights and equality.
“Pride means so much to me and to so many people across the UK and beyond and it is important that we take the time to celebrate the progress made over the last 50 years while continuing the important work for our community.”
Nicola Howell, Chief Commercial Officer at The Royal Mint said: “It has been a pleasure working with Dominique on the 50th anniversary of the Pride coin.
“Her design is a fitting tribute to Pride UK’s legacy and we know how excited collectors will be to find one in her change.”
“We are always looking to collaborate with talented British artists from all backgrounds who are passionate about bringing their own diverse experiences to life on an official British coin.”
