Rangnick admits Man Utd must continue to win the battle for 4th place

Ralf Rangnick hand can Nemanja Matic next chance in Manchester United’s upcoming games after checking his name on Wednesday night.

Matic came on from the bench in the 66th minute as part of Rangnick’s three-man substitution in the 1-1 draw against Atletico Madrid.

United struggled to get a foothold in the game and missed because of Joao Felix’s superb header in the seventh minute.

The visitors overcame their luck in Madrid and were perhaps lucky not to fall further behind in the second half.

But the arrival of Matic, along with full-backs Alex Telles and Aaron Wan-Bissaka, helped move momentum before substitute Anthony Elanga equalized.

Elanga race up Bruno Fernandes ‘dribble past and beat Jan Oblak one-on-one to give United a good chance in the second leg at Old Trafford on March 15.

The post-match reaction was understandably dominated by Elanga – and the latest song for United supporters to sing – but Rangnick was quick to highlight the impact of Matic.

“Yes, I know and of course, everyone can hear them singing that song,” Rangnick said. “Rhythm Is A Dancer, yes, I know that song. It’s great for the boy and it shows how creative our supporters can be.

“But I also have to say that while all the headlines are in his favor, it’s not just him, I think.

“In the second half we changed the dynamics, we regrouped the whole team, not just him but other players and other substitutes, including Nemanja Matic, who helped change the game. fight.”

Midfield equipping has been a longstanding issue for United this season under both Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Rangnick.

Both coaches tended to choose Fred alongside Scott McTominay in midfield, but it was Paul Pogba who received the nod against Atletico when the Scotland international was absent due to illness.

Donny van de Beek’s loan goes to Everton freed up a bit more space in the midfield, with Jesse Lingard still restricted from playing.

After his significant influence in Spain, Matic could therefore be booked for a more influential role under Rangnick for the remainder of the campaign.

The experienced 33-year-old has made 21 appearances in all competitions so far this season, but only eight of those have come in the game. Premier League.

Unlike Pogba and Lingard, Matic has a contract with United until June 2023 and his presence could be required in the upcoming matches against Watford and City of Manchester.

“It’s very important but this is the case with almost every game that we have in the future,” Rangnick said.

“We have to stay motivated, win against Watford tomorrow and be ready for the upcoming matches against the top teams. We are fully aware we have to win tomorrow.

“For us, it just makes sense to rest one game after another, the job now is to fully recover from yesterday’s game, play as good as possible tomorrow at home, hopefully. Hope to win the game against Watford and then we have a normal week to prepare for the derby against Manchester City.”
