Rangnick hopes to make the most of Leeds’ defensive struggles

Ralf Rangnick has responded to his critics – by insisting he’s doing a top job at Manchester United.

Rangnick, 63, was brought in at Old Trafford until the end of the season when the manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was fired in November.

And after suffering just one Premier League failed in their 11 ruling games, the Red Devils are back in the race for a place in the top 4.

Rangnick accepts that there have been some bumps along the way and that he is about to embark on a series of games that will make or break United’s season.

But he said: “The challenge for me came in the middle of the season, at a time when the team lacked confidence and were not performing well.

“And, of course, I had to work with a team that wasn’t put together by me.

“It is not a fallacy or an excuse, just a simple fact.

“For me, it’s about having the right combination and at the right time where we have to play offensively and defensively.

“Obviously we had to reduce the number of goals we conceded – which we are having – and on the other hand still have to be dangerous with the ball.

“I think we have shown some improvement in the weeks and months – but there is still room for more in the future.

“We just have to follow a game plan even when a game doesn’t go well, stay awake and stick to the plan even when it doesn’t work out.

“This is something we have to do better.”

March and April bring the Manchester derby with City leaders as well Tottenham, Liverpool, Leicester and Arsenal.

United have won just six of Rangnick’s Premier League games.

And disappointments have included being eliminated by Middlesbrough in FA Cup.

However, Rangnick will continue to focus the players’ minds on what is still achievable.

He is expected to move into a two-year advisory role in the summer and qualifying for the Champions League will help attract a top coach and players to Old Trafford.

“Of course, everyone wants to play in the Champions League every season, but we have to be realistic,” Rangnick said.

“I think when I arrived we were eighth in the table, quite a few points away.

“We are fourth now and fully know that a few teams have played two games less than us so far.

“We also know there will be big games in March and April including games against Tottenham and Arsenal and a few other teams chasing fourth place.

“But now it’s all about winning those games.

“It doesn’t make sense to talk about anything that has to be done over the summer that involves buying the right players or making changes within that squad.

“It is not a problem. My whole focus right now is on developing the team’s performance and hopefully winning as many games as possible. ”
