Ralf Rangnick apologized to Manchester United fans and called the 4-0 win over Brighton “humiliating” and “unacceptable”.
The United players were met with chants of “You’re not fit for the shirt” by their own fans on a remarkable night at the Amex Stadium.
A bitter defeat on the south coast meant the 20-time English champions finished with the lowest points of the Premier League era and dashed small hopes of qualifying for the Champions League.
“First of all, it’s important that we apologize to our fans who traveled all the way from Manchester to Brighton,” said interim manager Rangnick. “We just weren’t good enough from start to finish. The performance wasn’t just bad, it was extremely bad.
“It was a humiliating defeat and even more so for a side like Manchester United. You don’t just lose 4-0, it was the way we played and that’s just unacceptable, very difficult to process and cope with.”

Protesting traveling fans took aim at United owners again, with chants such as “love United, hate Glazers” and “we want Glazers out” erupting at the start of the game. They later became vocal in questioning their side’s commitment after the Albion quartet scored against Moises Caicedo, Marc Cucurella, Pascal Gross and Leandro Trossard.
Sixth-placed United have a maximum of 61 points this season – three fewer than 2013/14, which started under David Moyes and ended under Ryan Giggs.
Rangnick, whose side joined Sussex after beating Brentford 3-0 in their last game at Old Trafford, brushed off question marks over a lack of will in his side.
“I have to defend the players,” said the German. “I don’t think they are (indifferent). I saw her in training. I saw them against Brentford. We had a good training week with a good atmosphere and a good focus on the training sessions.
“But I remember watching the game against Watford away, 4-1 (under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer) who are now relegated and that looked very similar to what happened today. For me the problem is how to defend as a team. If you don’t defend yourself properly, if you give them all the space and time in the world, that’s the result.”
