Ralf Rangnick: Marcus Rashford has everything and we will help him to get in top form

Ralf Rangnick backed ‘rich talent’ Marcus Rashford to rediscover his top form as wasteful Manchester United prepare to take on rivals Manchester City.

he Etihad Stadium will host the 187th Manchester derby on Sunday as the Red Devils look to improve their top-four chances against the Premier League leaders.

United come into the game bruised from last weekend’s 0-0 draw against Watford, where their recent waste in front of goal continued on an afternoon when they managed 22 shots without a goal.

Star tournaments Cristiano Ronaldo has netted just once in ten games but Rangnick believes things are about to turn for the team with Edinson Cavani returning and Rashford set to shine in the coming weeks.

“A couple of things that have happened in the last few weeks or two months no one could have foreseen,” he said of United’s problems with scoring, appearing to nod at the suspension of forward Mason Greenwood.

“Now that Edinson is available at least for the game and the games to come, we have other options.

“In Marcus Rashford we have another player that I will insist on and will continually be behind him and with him to develop further.

“We’ve done that with a number of other young players in the past and I don’t see why that shouldn’t happen with Marcus.

“He’s got plenty of talent, he’s got the pace, he’s got the physicality, he’s got everything you need for a modern striker, whether he’s playing down the wing or down the middle.

“I will put all my energies into helping him embark on the same path that other players have embarked on over the past three months.”

Rangnick’s comments suggest Rashford could start at City but Cavani will almost certainly be reduced to one role off the bench after five games with a groin injury.

“Well, it’s good to have him back,” he said. “We still have an alternative in the central attacking position, but he’s been out for three weeks.

“We have to consider that too. I don’t think he could play more than, I don’t know, half an hour.

“He’s ready to come on as a substitute but I don’t think he’s up to the task to start this game.”

Another player returning to the competition is Scott McTominay.

The 25-year-old missed the Champions League round of 16 at Atletico Madrid through illness, which also saw him miss the game against Watford, and Rangnick has shown it had a major impact on the midfielder.

“Important to have him available,” the interim boss told MUTV. “He’s been training all week.

“He was only out for a week but he was really really ill and lost some weight.

“I think he could fight for the starting XI but I will decide that (Saturday) after the last training session.”
