Ralf Rangnick appear to be plotting a defensive overhaul after Harry Maguire and Raphael Varane failed to convince him they were the partners to make Manchester United striker.

Varane, 28 years old, from Real Madrid last summer for a Initial fee £34m to give United what appears on paper to be a formidable central defender alliance.

But this was not put on the field this season and only Southampton (37) conceded more goals Premier League more goals than the Red Devils (34) among the clubs in the top half of the table.

Maguire, 28 years old, has been under special surveillance and has even had phone calls stripped him of his captaincy – in the midst of his power struggle with Cristiano Ronaldo – in an attempt to improve his performance.

Rangnick has since thrown his weight behind the England international to continue as captain, but the latest reports suggest he remains unconvinced of his options at centre-back.

Mirror Sport understands that Old Trafford chiefs are weights for Antonio Rudiger, contract with whom? Chelsea expires this summer.

The German player, 28 years old, helped the Blues win Champions League last season and he continues to be a standout artist in his place.

Meanwhile, United is also understood as supervisor Manuel Akanji, who recently turned down an offer to sign a new contract at Borussia Dortmund.

The 26-year-old Switzerland international has less than 18 months left on his existing contract and reports from Germany linked him to United in early February.

According to a new report in Sport Bild, Akanji is unhappy with Dortmund’s offer of a €8m (£6.7m)-a-season extension and is trying to meet his €10m-a-year (£8.3m) demands.

Notably, United are said to be willing to go above and beyond these demands by presenting the player in a contract worth €15m (£12.5m) per season.

The Northwestern giants could have the edge in the race for Akanji as they could give him a chance to reunite with his former teammate Jadon Sancho.

Furthermore, their defensive target is known to have a soft spot for United having grown up supporting them and even stated that he would “want to play there one day”.

Dortmund are said to be looking for a replacement and have identified Freiburg’s Nico Schlotterbeck as a potential option.

So with Akanji firmly in sight and Rudiger as the latest defender United’s hierarchy is targeting, all could change at the back for the Reds by the start of the 2022 season /23.
