Rapper Kanye West finalizes deal to buy conservative platform Parler

Rapper and fashion kingpin Kanye West, who changed his official name to Ye last year, reached an agreement in principle on Monday to buy conservative social media platform Parler.

“In a world where conservative opinions are considered controversial, we must ensure we have the right to speak freely,” West said in a statement released by Parler.

The announcement comes after West, 45, came under scrutiny following a spate of anti-Semitic and inflammatory comments on social media in recent weeks.

In an Instagram post, he shared an anti-Semitic conspiracy theory suggesting that fellow rapper Sean “Diddy” Combs is controlled by Jews. Meanwhile, West’s Twitter account was restricted after he said he was going “Death con 3 on JEWISH PEOPLE.” Both Twitter and Instagram have since suspended the rapper from his accounts.

Financial details of the deal weren’t disclosed, but the company announced last month that it had raised $56 million in outside funding. While the deal would result in West becoming the majority owner of Parler, the company will likely maintain ties with parent company Parlement Technologies for its private cloud services and data center infrastructure.

West’s net worth is $2 billion, according to Forbes. Much of his wealth comes from his sneaker brand Yeezy and partnerships with Gap and Adidas. However, he recently cut ties with Gap and Adidas said it is also reviewing its relationship with him.

In buying Parler, West is following in the footsteps of an unlikely political ally, former President Donald Trump, who founded his own conservative online platform, Truth Social, after being banned from more mainstream social media sites.
