Rapper Kidd Creole, founding member of Grandmaster Flash and The Furious Five, has been sentenced to 16 years in prison for stabbing a homeless man on a New York City street.

The 62-year-old rapper, born Nathaniel Glover, was found guilty last month of manslaughter for killing John Jolly, who was stabbed twice in the chest with a steak knife in August 2017 in midtown Manhattan.

Prosecutors charged Glover with stabbing Mr Jolly after he got angry because he thought Mr Jolly was gay and was going to hit him.

After Glover stabbed the 55-year-old, he went to his work place nearby, changed his clothes and washed the knife, prosecutors said. Glover was arrested the following day.

“Mr. Jolly’s death was devastating to his family and those who knew him,” Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg said in a press release after the sentencing.

“Every life we lose to violent crime spreads throughout our city, and we will continue to make sure everyone in our community can live their life with the feeling of safety and security they deserve.”

The New York Times reports that Manhattan Superior Court Justice Michele Rodney appears to have challenged the arguments of Glover’s attorney Scottie Celestin, who said during the trial that Glover felt threatened in part because Mr. Jolly was homeless.

“A life is a life is a life,” Ms Rodney said, adding as she sentenced Glover on Wednesday that the murder “was not justified because the person is homeless”.

Mr Celestin said he would appeal the conviction.

Grandmaster Flash and The Furious Five formed in the Bronx in the late 1970s. The group’s best-known song is The Message from 1982.
