Rapper Mystikal refuses bail for rape allegations

A judge has refused to place any constraints on rapper Mystikal, who is accused of raping and suffocating a woman at his home in Louisiana.

Tate District Judge Steven Tureau ruled that the evidence against the 51-year-old man, whose real name is Michael Tyler, his past and the victim’s fears met the standard to hold him without bail. received, The Advocate reported.

Tyler served six years in prison after pleading guilty in 2003 to a sex charge. In December 2020, prosecutors in Caddo Parish, northwest Louisiana, dropped rape and kidnapping charges that landed him 18 months in prison.

He has not been convicted of other charges, including possession of marijuana and domestic violence charges, which have been brought against him since the mid-1990s, the newspaper reported.

Defense lawyer Roy Maughan Jr, who requested a $250,000 bond (£205,000), insists Tyler is innocent of the most recent charges, including rape and domestic abuse by strangulation, but told the newspaper after the hearing that Tyler would probably not appeal against the bond ruling.

Mr Maughan did not have court records to show that Tyler had declared all of his court dates in those cases and as a celebrity it would be difficult to evade arrest if he escaped.

He was dropped into a $3 million (£2.5m) bond in February 2019, nearly two years before Caddo Parish charges were dropped.

Mystikal, who grew up in New Orleans and now lives in Prairieville, is charged with assaulting the woman, taking keys and holding her against her will, according to an arrest warrant.

Sheriff’s Detective Garrett Keith told the court on Tuesday that the woman went to Tyler’s home on Saturday to talk about alleged financial commitments he had made to her.

He said the woman reported that Tyler’s behavior changed abruptly after he went to the bathroom and returned, accusing her of stealing cash, strangling her and pulling her hair.

Tyler later apologized, prayed to her and threw alcohol on her to cleanse her “bad spirit” before raping her, Mr.

Mr Maughan’s cross-examination of prayers and apologies indicated that things had calmed down and the woman was not scared, the newspaper reported.

Mr. Keith later told prosecutors that the woman was “praying for her safety” and did not know what Tyler was saying.

The woman was cut and bruised, and officers found some of her braids, an earring and a broken nail in her home, detectives said. Some of the injuries were consistent with rape, he added.

Mr Maughan cross-checked with Mr Keith about whether and how the woman objected to sex. Keith quoted her as saying that Tyler’s threats at first scared her to protest, but she later made it clear to him “no”.
