Breathing is something we do automatically and pay little attention to throughout the day.
In moments when you’re under pressure, you’ve probably told yourself to “just breathe.” In theory, we know that breathing can control our emotions, but how much do we really know about the power of breathwork?
Joining me this weekend is Stuart Sandeman, breathing expert, peak performance coach and presenter of BBC Radio 1’s decompression session.
Stuart’s new book Breathe In, Breathe Out provides readers with simple yet effective exercises that are guaranteed to recharge you, help you relax and improve your performance.
Stuart says people often say they’re too busy to improve their breathing, but he thinks we should make time for it.
“When you do something 20,000 times a day, don’t you want to know if you’re doing it right? If you do another task that often, you’ll surely want to learn a little more about that task, especially if it’s related to our energy levels, stress levels, sleep, and food digestion. All those things that are so important every day.”
Knowing how to breathe properly can also improve our fitness. Learning some good technique isn’t just for Olympic athletes. According to Stuart, it can also help those who are trying to get into a new fitness regimen but are always breathless.
“Our breathing is directly related to our fitness level. The two reasons you may not be able to go that extra lap or extra mile are either muscle pain, lactic acid build up, which has to do with breathing. Or you have such a bad feeling of shortness of breath that you can’t go on…Both are things we can fine-tune and improve dramatically.”
We also discuss whether hormonal birth control can affect women when exercising and how women’s body composition differs from men’s.
