It’s fair to say I’m a bit obsessed with my fridge.
I look forward to the weekly routine of organizing the grocery store into glass containers.
Aside from looking good, can fridge organization help reduce food waste?
What belongs on every shelf and is there any food that should never be kept on it?
Agnes Bouchier-Hayes, Resident Economist at TUS Midwest, helps me answer all of these questions.
I always sort my groceries into separate glass containers to keep in the fridge.
It may look neat and tidy, but does it help keep food fresher for longer?
Well, according to Agnes, these glass containers can help with that: “The glass absorbs the cold, so you keep the food at a more constant temperature as you open and close the fridge.”
Agnes points out that many foods should not be taken out of the packaging they come in: “Plastic isn’t great.
“However, there are small laser holes in packaging that reduce oxygen exchange.
“When you take something out of the packaging, you open it up to the environment and oxygen.
“While it’s kept in its plastic wrapper…[food] is more stable and you will benefit from it for longer.”
We also discuss why it’s so important to keep your fridge clean, and I ask the all-important question, should eggs be kept in or out of the fridge?
