Reboot Star Keegan-Michael Key talks intense comedy, emulates 90s sitcoms, etc. [Exclusive Interview]

Have you been involved with this series since it started being developed, or have you joined in at a later time?

At the beginning of development, I sat down with Steve and had a meeting many years ago, and he presented the idea to me. And I said, “I’m in. I’m here for it. I’m engaged. Wherever this takes place, no matter how long it takes, I’m in.” And we went from there. So I joined from the start.

You are not only starring in this series but also as a producer. Considering your extensive experience in creating, writing, and producing your own TV projects, you can talk about how involved you were in the creative direction of the show when you weren’t. the creator of the show but do you still star and produce?

Yes, that is an interesting division of labor for me. Most of the time, I would say, what I do is I spend time clarifying. So on set, if possible I could make it clearer or make something a little more pop, I would do a lot of the production on set. So I’ll make a comment on “What if we change that line here to this,” or “Can I massage this here?” And only discuss with Ethan Anderton Steve [Levitan]. For me, it’s all about clarity. How do we make it as clear as possible?

Then the other thing is to scatter my focus a bit. So I spend half of my time, or 70% of my time, thinking about Reed and his motivations, what he wants to do, what he’s trying to achieve as an individual. object. Then I spent another time thinking, how does this logistically work so that the audience will laugh at it? That’s funny, Paul [Reiser] there’s that line in the show, his character says, “Last time I checked, we were writing a comedy show. We didn’t want them sitting around thinking games. We really wanted to. they laugh,” which almost looks like he’s making Steve’s mission statement. So I feel like it’s part of my job sometimes. “Are we going to do this here? I feel like we should have that coverage there.” That way to make sure it’s certain, that the comedy is sure.
