One of the compounds in celery thought to be responsible for lowering blood pressure is the phytochemical phthalide.

There is evidence that the compound as an extract can relax the tissues within arterial walls, allowing more blood to flow through.

Nitrites, also found in abundance in celery, are beneficial for similar reasons.

A study published in the National Library of Medicine examined the change in blood pressure after celery juice in hypertensive elderly men.

The research involved a 74-year-old man with hypertension who underwent interventions that included daily intake of celery juice for more than six months.

The researchers noticed a significant improvement in his blood pressure measurement.

The study concluded that celery and celery juice could be used to treat high blood pressure after the patient “responded positively.”
