Republicans are asking Elon Musk to restore Donald Trump’s Twitter account after Tesla CEO becomes largest shareholder

Republicans are calling on Elon Musk to restore former President Donald Trump’s Twitter account after the Tesla founder became a controlling shareholder of the social media platform.

Will new controlling shareholder Twitter give back freedom of speech?” asked Georgia Republican Marjorie Taylor Greene. “It will take courage as the regime is investing heavily in a particular industry and threats will undoubtedly come. But restored freedom of expression will enable us all to defeat them.”

The price of Twitter stock rose 25 percent after Mr Musk bought a 9.2 percent stake in the company, becoming the largest shareholder.

Mr. Musk owns 73,486,938 Twitter shares, according to a Securities and Exchange Commission filing released Monday. Based on the company’s closing price on Friday, the stake is worth $2.89 billion, CNBC reported.

Mr Musk, who has more than 80 million Twitter followers, made the purchase just weeks after criticizing the company for not adhering to the principles of free speech.

“Now that @ElonMusk is Twitter’s largest shareholder, it’s time to end political censorship,” Colorado Republican Representative Lauren Boebert tweeted. “Oh… and bring Trump back!”

Former President Donald Trump was banned from the platform following the January 6, 2021 Capitol riots.

Former Assistant Secretary of Public Affairs at the Treasury Department during the Trump administration, Monica Crowley, tweeted, “Now that @elonmusk is Twitter’s largest shareholder, he should be calling for an end to political censorship, company-wide reforms, and the reinstatement of President Trump.”

Errol Webber is a Republican congressional candidate in California. He wrote that Mr Musk “is now Twitter’s largest shareholder. It’s time to restore this platform to its former glory. Step One – Bring President Trump Back! Step two – give anyone who’s been banned a second chance. Step three – end all forms of political and other censorship.”

Ned Ryun, a conservative activist, added: “Fascinating. Would be epic if Musk forced Twitter to let Trump back on even though Trump might not want that. Would dilute his value and power with Truth Social.” Republicans are asking Elon Musk to restore Donald Trump’s Twitter account after Tesla CEO becomes largest shareholder
