Rescuers combing the ruins of a devastated city near Kyiv have found seven bodies as search efforts continue.
The State Emergency Service of Ukraine said that on Monday the bodies of seven people buried in the rubble of two destroyed high-rise buildings in the city of Borodyanka were found.
More than two hundred rescue workers have been scrambling to find missing residents since Ukraine retook the city west of Kyiv after Russian troops began withdrawing from the region late last month.
So far, the bodies of 19 people have been found in the destroyed buildings, the state emergency service said in a statement.
Mechanical excavators Monday cleared concrete rubble at the base of the charred remains of a home.
Some rescuers stood by with sniffer dogs, while others peered through the rubble with torches, searching for people underneath. A body lay in a bag on the side of the road.
Ministry spokeswoman Svetlana Vodolaga said: “We do not know the final number of people under the rubble.
“The only information we have is that during the shelling of that particular building, calls came in from people who were under the rubble.”
Elsewhere in the city, volunteers cleared debris from a children’s playground on Monday.
Workers lifted a burned-out Russian armored car onto the back of a truck.
“It’s shocking (to see that). What else can I say,” said Maria Glushenko, 68, a resident of Borodyanka. “People died, young people died. Such good people.”
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said the situation in the city of Borodyanka was “much more dire” than in nearby Bucha, where Ukraine accuses Russia of war crimes.
Moscow denies this allegation.
Elsewhere, in Bucha, 35 km northwest of Kyiv, local officials said more than 300 people were killed by Russian forces and about 50 of them were executed.
Bodies were reportedly found with signs of torture and some with bullets to the head while their hands were tied.
Moscow has denied attacking civilians and says images of dead bodies in Bucha were staged by the Ukrainian government to justify further sanctions against Moscow and derail peace talks.
Ukraine has previously urged allies to stop buying Russian oil and gas and strengthen it militarily amid divisions in Europe.
“Ukraine needs weapons that will give it the opportunity to win on the battlefield, and this will be the toughest sanction against Russia,” said Zelenskyy.
