Research shows that hitting children doesn’t work—it just makes bad behavior worse

Hitting children has been effectively banned in Ireland since December 2015. I was genuinely surprised to learn last week that a ban was relatively recently introduced in Scotland and Wales and that hitting children as a ‘reasonable punishment’ is still legal in England and Northern Ireland.

The generally accepted term of “corporal punishment” is used in research. According to the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child, corporal punishment refers to “any punishment involving the use of physical force intended to cause some degree of pain or discomfort, however slight”.
