A nursing home was evacuated as firefighters battled a blaze in a nearby field.
Five fire engines and one 4×4 vehicle from the West Sussex Fire and Rescue Service were called to Yapton Lane in the village of Walberton, near Bognor, after the fire broke out.
Residents of the Walberton Place nursing home were evacuated as a precaution while firefighters worked to put out the blaze.
Aerial photos of the crime scene show the land charred by the fire.
A spokeswoman for West Sussex Fire and Rescue confirmed that residents at the care home have now safely returned to the property.
She said: “The fire has been brought under control but firefighters are staying on site and dampening to ensure there are no further hot spots.
“The fire brigade will remain on duty until the evening.
“The Met Office heatwave warning remains in place for the coming days and the risk of wildfires will remain extremely high.
“We urge all residents to be extra careful.”
