Retro smartphones that could make you thousands after original iPhone sells for £35,000

RETRO smartphones sitting in the back of your closet and forgotten could be worth thousands on resale sites.

Experts say an original iPhone is worth £542.55 on eBay today, while the Motorola DynaTAC 8000X will fetch you £1,776.01.

Even the hugely popular Nokia 3310 – which has sold 126 million units worldwide – can range from £10 to £55.

It follows the sale of an unopened first-generation iPhone this week for $39,000 (£34,700) – more than 50 times its original price.

It’s highly unlikely that your old gadgets will bring in that much, but research from Protect Your Bubble suggests you could still turn a profit.

It is believed that there are around 527 million unwanted electronic devices lying around in UK homes – around 20 per household.

Smartphones make up the vast majority of hoarded technology, with 30 million Brits owning two or more, according to GiffGaff.

Protect your bubble’s research found that the retro DynaTAC – the world’s first portable cell phone – is the most valuable cell phone sold on eBay.

However, there is a small market for it, only 12 were sold last year.

In second place is the HTC Touch Diamond2, with a model fetching £542.90 this year.

Windows released the gadget in 2009, a year after the release of the second generation iPhone 3G, and was seen by many as the first credible alternative to Apple’s popular phones.

The HTC Touch Diamond2 is worth significantly more than its predecessor. The HTC Touch Diamond costs just £13.42.

In third place is the original iPhone model, which came out in 2007 and costs an average of £542.55.

Rounding out the top six are the iPhone 3G, Motorola RAZR2 and Motorola Microtac 9800X, which sell for an average of £308.68, £239.25 and £239.36 respectively.

James Brown, director at Protect Your Bubble, said: “After 40 years of mobile phones, it’s interesting to see which old phones Brits are willing to pay good money for.

“If you have any old phones lying around as the cost of living in the UK continues to rise – now might be the time to ditch the nostalgia and sell.

“But remember, the better the condition, the more profitable it will be. Take good care of it with a protective case or cover, clean it regularly and keep the software up to date.”

Earlier this year, a survey found that Britons were sitting on an estimated £16billion worth of idle technology in their homes.

Old smartphones, DVD players and even Tamagotchis are some of the most common items in our closets.

In fact, some have even stuck to retro items from the ’90s, including Walkmans and Game Boys.
