Announced at State of Play today, Returnal will receive a new free update later this month that includes a new big challenge, as well as the ability to play cooperatively with friends.
Returnal’s Ascension 3.0 update was released on March 22, 2022, and will feature both online campaign co-op as well as a new survival mode called The Tower of Sisyphus.
According to the PlayStation Blog, the co-op mode will be accessed through the Chronosis portal near the crash landing site, as well as in other select parts of the game. You can host a co-op or join another public game, or host or join a private game with a friend. Players will be bound together to prevent them from getting too far apart and can revive each other if knocked down. Game progress is tied to the server.
Tower of Sisyphus is truly an endless survival game mode where you try to climb as high as possible, with challenges and enemies that get harder as you go higher. Each stage in the tower culminates in a battle with Algos that is also progressively more difficult and scores will be tracked on the leaderboard. The Tower also includes some new narrative content.
Notably, The Tower of Sisyphus cannot be done in co-op (and some moments of the story are solo only), but much of the game seems to be available to play with a friend – a Support is welcome because of how difficult Returnal can be.
In our review, we loved Returnal’s gameplay, weapon selection, and punishing difficulty, calling it “an amazingly human-like game and one of Housemarque’s best games. hitherto.”
