Return to Monkey Island announced via anti-April Fool’s joke

April Fool’s Day seems to be a prime opportunity for silly pranks and mischievous behavior. I’ve never been a fan of it myself, and neither has Ron Gilbert. When the Monkey Island co-creator slyly announced he might be working on one new monkey island game Via his blog Grumpy Gamer, fans flocked to the forums on April 1, 2022 to share their confusion.

Gilbert had sworn off April Fools’ Day for 18 years and made the blog April Fools’ Day Free because “it’s a stupid tradition.” Well said. Immediately afterwards, however, Gilbert said, “So, to shake things up a bit, I’m taking this opportunity to announce that I’ve decided to do another Monkey Island.” That really threw a spanner in the works for readers , but we can’t say he didn’t warn us because he did… until 2013.

With the news breaking on April Fool’s Day of all days, not everyone (including me) was convinced that this was a real announcement. As one of the many commenters noted, this was “LeChuck-level evil.” Although the post was titled “April Fool’s Day 2022,” Gilbert wasn’t joking. The only joke he made was the April Fool’s joke itself.

The official announcement for the Return to Monkey Island game came just a few days later. While the teaser trailer doesn’t show much in terms of gameplay, we can safely assume that Melee Island and villain LeChuck are back from the original game, and we can expect to see them sometime in 2022.

In addition, Michael Land, Clint Bajakian and Peter McConnel are back to create the game’s score, and Dominic Armato is also returning to voice Guybrush Threepwood. With updated graphics, traditional Monkey Island gameplay, and many original crews on board, Return to Monkey Island is sure to have many fans eagerly awaiting its arrival.

Return to Monkey Island is developed by Terrible Toybox and published by Lucasfilm Games and Devolver Digital. The new title is set to pick up where Monkey Island 2 left off and will be released in 2022.
