When Returnal released on PS5 last year, it marked Housemarque’s rise to become one of Sony’s premier first-party studios. But getting to this point wasn’t easy, says Returnal director Harry Krueger, who likens the development to “Sisyphus pushing up the boulder” and says it was “incredibly challenging.”
Speaking during GDC 2022, Krueger reflected on the challenges and achievements of making Returnal, by far Housemarque’s most ambitious project to date. They learned how to design a 3D action game and got to grips with a brand new engine while more than tripling the overall size of the team.
“It was really just constant adjustment, and that was also a real challenge,” says Krueger. “Everyone underestimated the complexity of the project.”
