Revealed: ‘Irish orphan’ living in Scotland is actually US rape suspect Nicholas Rossi, Sheriff Rules

One man who has fought extradition to the US is fugitive rape suspect Nicholas Rossi, a sheriff has ruled.

The 35-year-old has spent the last 11 months tricking Scottish courts into believing he is Arthur Knight, an orphan from Ireland who has never been to the US.

Sheriff Norman McFadyen told Edinburgh Sheriff Court he had found the man to be Rossi – whom US authorities were looking for in connection with allegations of rape and sexual assault.

The sheriff said, “I am ultimately satisfied with the balance of probabilities … that Mr. Knight is in fact Nicholas Rossi, the person wanted by the United States for extradition.”

A full hearing on Rossi’s extradition to the US will now take place in Scotland in March.

Mungo Bovey KC, who is defending himself, requested bail for his client on the grounds that he remains charged and not convicted.

But Sheriff McFadyen dismissed the objection “given the risk he represented of absconding.”

Rossi had previously tried to convince the courts that he had been tattooed while in a coma and that his fingerprints had been taken by an NHS worker named “Patrick” on behalf of US prosecutors in order to frame him.

In a 15-minute conclusion yesterday, Sheriff McFadyen dismissed Rossi’s lies as “unbelievable” and “imaginative”.

The sheriff also dismissed Rossi’s argument that he had changed his name several times to break away from an allegedly traumatic childhood.

Rossi was first arrested in October last year after checking himself into Glasgow’s Queen Elizabeth University Hospital with Covid-19.

It is alleged that he faked his own death in the US and fled to Scotland to avoid prosecution.

While hiding in Scotland under the alias Knight posing as a tutor, Rossi developed Covid pneumonitis and became “the sickest patient on the ward”, according to medical staff.

At that point, Scottish Police officers received a red note from Interpol with pictures of the man they were looking for, including pictures of his tattoos and fingerprints. Revealed: ‘Irish orphan’ living in Scotland is actually US rape suspect Nicholas Rossi, Sheriff Rules
